You know what totally sucks?

Kidney stones.

They are even worse when you are pregnant and there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING you can do to help relieve the pain.

I'm fine now... until those little ticking time bombs decide to start moving and hurt me again.

The first time I had them I was 19. It was a hellish day and by the end of it, the ER doctor announced, "Now that you've had them, you'll probably get them the rest of your life."

She was right. They've snuck up on me every few years since then. It doesn't get easier.

I didn't have any bouts with stones while I was pregnant with Fischer, but two months after he was born, I was in pain. It turned out that the stones were so big, I had to have a lithotripsy to blast them into passable bits.

In the three years since then, I've had them a handful of times, but not quite as painful.

I have had them TWICE during this pregnancy already! Bad ones! No pain killers, no help, just had to "tough it out". Tuesday was unbearable! I needed drugs!

Waaa! OK, enough of the sob story.

Oooo- I remember the first time you had them :( and, not any more encouraging, my sister was hospitalized after baby number three for an infection related to kidney stones- then went into potassium deficiency- not good all around. She had to have them blasted too- It's amazing that there is nothing you can do for them. Here's to appreciating the pain free moments!

Glad you've won the fight! Let's hope this is your last battle when no pain meds are allowed.

HI I am ELlens friend Anthea and I had kidney stones when I was pregnant with #1. I know KNOW KNOW your pain! My kidney stones blocked my urerter and made it so I had to have surgury AWAKE on MORIPHINE to put a tube in my back to drain the urine. TONS of pain killers in the ER, OR and Recovery. Percodane, and Diloted. BIG DOSES!! I have to tell you that when the pain was bad for the last 3 months I took pain killers. My ob and my urologist BOTH agreed it was better for me to be comfortable that it was for me to be in pain because of the stress the pain has on the baby. Needless to say my baby was born 100% normal, happy and healthy. Just wanted you to know from another pregnant mom that I went through that and the drugs were necessary and Madeline was fine. OF COURSE you do what you have to do, but for me, the pain was WAYYY to much to bear.
